Their corruptible mortal state by JonBeanHastings Their corruptible mortal state by JonBeanHastings
Two of the Haunted Mansion stretching-room portraits, drawn as close to creator Marc-Davis-original as I could do then (except done in brown ink to better translate in to black and white.)

Done for the third issued of SLG "Haunted Mansion' comic.

(A related question: How do you think that guy ended up standing on a lit barrel of dynamite in his underwear?)

I saw that story about Steven there. Lost his glasses, wandered through the Mansion, thought the Gunpowder room was a pantry, stood on a barrel of "pickled ham," after setting down his candle.

He wasn't wearing them in the first place.

I love this ride! I went to Disneyland over the summer, and went on this ride twice. I would have gone on it more, but the lines were always so long!

Anyway, this picture is beautiful! ^^

Thank you... it's one of my "must do" rides every time my wife and I go. In fact, we're going to get to ride it this Halloween, which makes it even more spooky!

It would be so cool to work in there, but it would get spooky after awhile. I've heard it's cool around Christmastime, because they decorate it for Nightmare Before Christmas.

They actually decorated that way starting in October... it's pretty spectacular, the whole thing is completely changed, story and all.

very nice! :D i love the choice of ink :) as for the guy in his knickers, according to wikkipedia a series of comics were done about the ride and one was about him, apparently he was invited to the mansion one night and ignored his wife's nagging about going pantless, along the way to the mansion he loses his classes and finds himself standing on top of a barrel of tnt thus becoming one of the portrait ghosts, kinda vague but there u are lol

That comic is the comic that these characters are from, "Haunted Mansion" published by Slave Labor Graphics. In fact, I have a story in the issue that story is from.

Well, practice, practice, practice, as they say. (Although, really, even I'm not that good since I copied it from master cartoonist Marc Davis's originals. Now him you should be good like one day.)

It's claimed that the guy in the pants was claimed to be a relative of George Gracey, I think...it was Yale Gracey. Anyway, he was an ambassador, and one night he was to give a speech to some embassy. Before the speech, his pants were getting cleaned or oressed or something. So some people invaded it and the ambassador stood ontop of a dynamite key and said 'If you want the embassy, you'll have to take me with it!' So, they left him with a dynamite keg already lighting up.

I love this. Miss Lilian O'Mally, the tightrope walker is my fave. ^^

(Side note that you probably already know: Yale Gracey was an imagineer who worked on the Haunted Mansion).

(Ah yes, I know of that. It's awesome how they used his name to bring a HM character to life and afterlife. ^^)

Then they did their job well. I love that they're all three jokes in one. First, you get the serious portrait, then a twist (the guy's in his underwear, the widow's sitting on a grave, the girl's on a tight rope, the guy's sitting on another guy's shoulders), then yet another twist (he's standing on a barrel of TNT, she's an ax murderer, she's going to be eaten by a crocodile, they're in quicksand.) Comedy gold, I tell ya!

(sorry for faving without commenting at first, I was actually AT Disneyland at the time, lol!)

ANYWAY, I absolutely adore the Haunted Mansion, and my favourite part (except for maybe the bride attic) is the stretching paintings, and those two are my favourite paintings. I love how you captured the essence, but they're clearly in your own style, as well. The sepia works beautifully! <3

Why thank you. Since I had paid tribute to Marc Davis in the story I did for the first issue of the Haunted Mansion comic, I wanted to see what drawing like him would be like. It was both surprisingly easy and very difficult at the same time.

Did you say "Hi!" to my sister when you were at Disneyland? (She works at Innoventions).

as for your question about the underwear man this should help:

Uncle Edward Gracey was the brother of George Gracey, Sr.. Edward never married, though a brief liaison with a Miss Foster in Buffalo produced an illegitimate son, Eddy, born about the same time as Master Gracey. Eddy Foster would one day be the Mansion’s gardener.

After college, Edward Gracey entered the diplomatic corps. His duties took him from the State Department in Washington to far-flung capitals of the globe. He only returned to the Gracey home once, to attend his brother’s funeral and his sister-in-law’s trial.

Uncle Edward helped his nephew whenever he could. While serving as consul to Cairo, he obtained permission for Master Gracey to export an Egyptian mummy and sarcophagus. The last time the two relatives met was when Master Gracey traveled to Africa on a bat-hunting expedition. They had a falling-out over the way Master Gracey was spending the family fortune, and never spoke again.

In 1937, Edward was appointed ambassador to Burma. One evening, soon after his arrival in Rangoon, he was dressing for a banquet. While waiting for his trousers to be pressed, he looked over his speech. Suddenly, armed insurgents burst into the embassy compound, ordering everyone to evacuate. Edward slipped into a secret passage taking him from his quarters to his office. There he discovered guerrillas putting a candle to the fuse on a keg of dynamite. Edward leaped on top of the barrel and declared: "If you blow up this building, you’ll have to take me with it!" The men looked at each other, shrugged, and left. He tried in vain to extinguish or remove the fuse. Like a captain going down with his ship, Edward Gracey went up with his embassy.

Not bad. I especially like the part about him being a diplomat and "going up with the embassy" is just the kind of twist I like.
