Japanese Culture by JonBeanHastings Japanese Culture by JonBeanHastings
I thought this summed up Japanese culture pretty well; a rich and complex history and Super Day-Glo Happy Fun Giggle Time Explosion, all mixed together in an chankonabe-style soup of wonder and wackiness.

Watercolor and ink on Bristol board. Done for the Santa Cruz Japanese Cultural Fair.

Thanks. It is steeped in ritual and tradition and goofy as all get out, isn't it?

the only thing missing is a really pretty guy with a guitar wearing a schoolgirl outfit over his normal clothes. trust me, it makes perfect sense after a while.

Thanks. I have a Japanese friend who was born and lived there until she was sixteen. She has shown us a great deal about her culture, from food (sometimes scary) to films (Kurosawa rocks) to everything in-between. She's the real reason I felt confident enough to do this picture and feel secure that it more then just stereotyping.

I'm as shocked as you are! I had know idea I could work them watercolors that well... and I did it in one day! (Recently self-learned watercoloring secrect: penil, watercolor, THEN ink... that way the black not only pops more ['cuase it's on top of all the paint] but you can cover up those annoying imperfect watercoloring lines).

Took me 15 years to shift that paradigm, tell you what. Also, work light to dark and bulid up in layers, starting with the paint watered down to about a quarter of what the final color intensity will be (but those I already knew).

What does the balloon say?

The ballon says "Japan" (or, actually, "Nihon.") I even signed it with the "Mame" kanji (which, of course, means "Bean.")

So, then, Mimi Mame would be "Ear Bean?"

And I guess "Mimi Mame Mumu," aside from being fun to say, would mean "Ear Bean Hawaiian Dress."

Hahaha awesome! If you ever add a background, half should be a peaceful ink painting of bamboo that melts into neon-colored manga action lines.
