Death takes a holiday by JonBeanHastings Death takes a holiday by JonBeanHastings
Death from "Sandman" taking a break from work by visiting Kostnice Ossuary ([link]) "The Church of Bones," a real (creepy) place in Prague. Pen and Ink on Bristol board. Done for NeilGaiman.com message board's fifth anniversary.

Kinda creepy is right! Seems much more "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" decoration than stuff you'd find in a church. But I guess if you're bored and you've got piles on piles of bones, whatcha gonna do?

Nice detail! I really like the csimple coloring of Death, compared to the more complex colorring of the wall. I also like the way you drew her. :)

Thank you. Death is easy to color, since she's a pale Goth and all. Also, just leaving her white made her pop off the page that much more.

I stole her hair from Mary Tyler-Moore on "The Dick VanDyke Show." Now she has no hair.

i havnt read sandman before but i looked it up a while ago. this looks good. did the skulls take awhile.

by the way do you read the comic "FABLE"? coz id like to see your 'interpretation' of it coz your artwork is good and would suit it.

" havnt read sandman before but i looked it up a while ago. this looks good. did the skulls take awhile."

The skulls did take a while, but not as long as all the scritchy-sratchy cross-hatching behind them.

"by the way do you read the comic "FABLE"? coz id like to see your 'interpretation' of it coz your artwork is good and would suit it. "

I'm surprised that I haven't read it. I know about it, I know what it's about but I just haven't picked up yet. Shame on me.

"haha, death" is not a phrase you hear everyday (and don't you have to get ready to go to England? What are you doing looking at silly pictures... go pack already! ;) )

Remember to look to the right first when crossing the street. I don't want you coming back here all flattened by a double-decker omnibus or some such.

I may scream from the awesomeness... Death has to be one of my favorite comic characters *ever* and you did a great job with the clothes.

Thanks, we always see her in modern clothes or Victorian garb, I thought it would be fun to see what she'd look like in the early 60's. I figured if she looks like a Goth now, she'd look just as fashionable then (except, as usual, in all black.)

You're Welcome. Have you read At Death's Door? Jill Thompson did all the art & writing, and she came up with some pretty awesome outfits.

Yup. I'm a big Jill Thompson fan. "Scary Godmother" was a huge influence on my kid's book.

Now that I think about it, I'm pretty sure I own every Sandman related comic ever. Damn.

It's a special technique I use called "tracing." Works wonders when combined with lots and lots of manic crosshatching.
